Efficacy of Fluconazole Therapy in Oropharyngel Candidiasis of Cancer Patients

Abstract
Fluconazole is a new antifungal agent. Twelve cancer patients who were diagnosed as oropharyngeal candidiasis participated in this study to evaluate the antifungal efficacy and safety of fluconazole.
The male to female ratio was 3: 1, and median (range) age was 46 (18-62). The sites of primary neoplasms and number of patients were as following acute leukemia 5, lymphoma 2, head and neck cancer 2, and other solid tumor 3.
Fluconazole was given as 100mg intravenously every day for 1.0-14 days.
overall response rate was 92%. Out of 12 patients, 6 (50%) achieved cure, 5 (42%)
achieved improvement, and 1(8%) was failed to achieve response. No severe side effects were observed in these patients.
These results shows that fluconazole is effective in the treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis of cancer patients, and can be administered safely with minimal side effects.
